Brazilian star Patricio Pitbull seeks freedom from PFL contract

Airs His Frustrations Publicly

Patricio “Pitbull” Freire has made his dissatisfaction with PFL very clear. Three weeks ago, the Brazilian featherweight champion shared his frustrations through a series of posts on X and Instagram. Pitbull stated he had communicated his desire to fight at least three times in 2024. However, he claims the organization has failed to fulfill those promises.

Pitbull specifically criticized PFL’s management, accusing them of paying “crazy amounts” to semi-retired fighters and social media personalities. Meanwhile, active fighters striving to make a name for themselves continue to be neglected. His outcry reflects a broader concern within the MMA community regarding PFL’s treatment of its roster since acquiring Bellator.

Disappointed by a Cancelled Fight

In an interview with Ariel Helwani, Pitbull and his manager further elaborated on their frustration. Pitbull revealed that his breaking point came when PFL canceled his scheduled fight on December 31 without explanation. This sudden decision pushed him to publicly call out the organization and demand transparency.

“I still don’t know [why it was canceled],” said Pitbull. “I’m still waiting. They told me there would be many opportunities for me to fight this year, but no one knows why [it didn’t happen].”

The lack of clarity surrounding his future has left Pitbull frustrated and uncertain about his career under the PFL banner.

Pitbull Eyes UFC for His Legacy

With tensions mounting, Pitbull has now made it clear: he wants out. His ultimate goal is to join the UFC and take on the best featherweights in the world. At 37 years old, Pitbull knows he’s nearing the end of his career and wants to make the most of the time he has left in the cage.

“It’s about legacy for me now. I want to fight in the UFC,” Pitbull said, emphasizing his desire to cement his place as one of the greatest featherweights in MMA history.

The veteran fighter is hoping PFL will grant him an early release from his contract. However, as of now, it remains unclear whether the organization will allow him to walk away without fulfilling his final fight obligation.

Growing Discontent Within PFL

Patricio Pitbull is not the only fighter voicing concerns about PFL’s operations. Other notable Bellator champions, including bantamweight titleholder Patchy Mix, have also expressed frustrations over inaction and lack of communication since the acquisition. Fighters have publicly criticized PFL for failing to deliver on promised opportunities, leading to growing discontent among top-tier athletes.

PFL’s decision to prioritize big-name acquisitions over their active roster has drawn scrutiny. Fighters like Pitbull believe their careers are being hindered during a critical stage. As PFL navigates these internal struggles, the outcome of Pitbull’s request could set a precedent for other fighters seeking a release.

The situation remains ongoing, but one thing is certain: Patricio Pitbull has no interest in staying under the PFL banner. His sights are set on UFC, and he hopes the organization will let him pursue his dream before time runs out.
