Robert Whittaker plans to adjust his fighting style following his loss to Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 308. In the co-main event, Chimaev secured an early takedown, leading to Whittaker’s submission within three minutes. Now, the Australian fighter is back in the gym, exploring new approaches to his performance in the octagon.
Whittaker’s New Approach Aims to Surprise
A victory over Chimaev would likely have positioned Whittaker for another title shot. Despite the setback, he remains confident in his ability to return to the top. Approaching his 34th birthday in December, Whittaker believes he still has untapped potential. He mentioned on the MMArcade Podcast,
“I have still got a few tricks up my sleeve. I have still got a few goals I want to reach. I am tinkering with some new skills.”
Recognizing that his fighting style has remained consistent for over a decade, Whittaker acknowledges that many of his opponents have studied his techniques since their early careers. He sees the need for evolution, stating,
“I have been fighting the same way for about 12 years. A lot of these new guys coming up were watching me when they were kids. So I think the script on how I fight is out there, it is time to change things up a little bit.”
While specific details of his new style remain under wraps, Whittaker hinted,
“I am going to surprise a few people. Let us leave it at that for now.”

Advocating for Chimaev’s Title Shot
Prior to UFC 308, Dricus Du Plessis suggested that a win for Whittaker would earn him the next title shot, whereas a victory for Chimaev would favor Sean Strickland as the contender. However, following Chimaev’s performance, Du Plessis expressed a preference to face the wrestler.
Strickland has been anticipating a title opportunity since his victory over Paulo Costa in June. He maintains that he won his first bout against Du Plessis and considers himself the rightful next challenger. Contrarily, Whittaker believes Chimaev deserves the title shot, stating,
“I think [Khamzat] should go straight to Dricus. I never think sitting out should be rewarded.”
