Khamzat Chimaev on Whittaker’s Injury: “It Wasn’t Intentional”
Chimaev Reflects on Breaking Whittaker’s Jaw
Khamzat Chimaev, after his commanding victory over Robert Whittaker at UFC 308, addressed the serious injury Whittaker suffered due to his submission hold. Chimaev explained at the post-fight press conference that he did not intend to cause such severe harm. Reflecting on the match, he said,
“I didn’t mean to break somebody’s chin, but it’s my work, to make somebody pain and make me happy, my family.” According to Chimaev, he became aware something was wrong as he felt “some clicks” when applying the hold.
However, he only realized the full extent of the damage upon seeing the photo later on, where Whittaker’s jaw and teeth showed signs of intense force and injury.
Despite the intense battle in the Octagon, Chimaev expressed a deep respect for Whittaker, calling him both a “great guy” and a “great champion.” Chimaev elaborated on how he had long admired Whittaker’s skills and accomplishments and even shared his interest in potentially training with Whittaker in the future.
“If Rob open[s] for that…of course, I want to train with that guy…I can learn a lot of things,” he added, reflecting on his desire to continue developing as a fighter by learning from respected figures in the sport.
