Islam Makhachev Speaks Out on Russia’s Olympic Ban
Makhachev’s Title Defense and Injury
Islam Makhachev, the reigning UFC lightweight champion, last defended his title in June at UFC 302 against Dustin Poirier. Makhachev secured victory via submission, but the intense match resulted in some ligament injuries in his hand, causing him to take time off for recovery.
Makhachev’s Views on Russia’s Olympic Ban
Recently, Makhachev expressed his frustration over Russia’s exclusion from the 2024 Paris Olympics due to ongoing political tensions, particularly related to the invasion of Ukraine. In a post on X, he voiced his disappointment:
“I love watching wrestling today. It’s a pity that dirty politics got into such a courageous sport. People who have dedicated their lives to the sport and got a chance to compete in the Olympics were forced to stay home and watch it on TV. The hypocrisy of certain countries robs athletes of what they’ve worked their entire lives for.”

Makhachev, who has consistently supported Russian athletes, condemned the decision, arguing that the Olympics should be a celebration of sport, free from political interference. He further criticized the Paris 2024 Games, calling them a “dark stain” on the Olympic movement and suggesting that Russia could restore the integrity of the event if given the chance to host it again.
What’s Next for Makhachev?
Looking ahead, Makhachev has hinted at a return in 2025 to defend his title, with potential matchups including a super fight against Leon Edwards. However, that plan was derailed after Belal Muhammad defeated Edwards. Now, Arman Tsarukyan is emerging as a likely opponent, though it remains to be seen whether Tsarukyan will wait for Makhachev’s return or compete for an interim title in the meantime.
