After his submission victory over Dustin Poirier at UFC 302, the dominant lightweight champion Islam Makhachev is in a prime position for what could be the biggest fight of his illustrious career—a potential title bout against Conor McGregor.

Ali Abdelaziz’s Optimism

In an interview with Submission Radio, Makhachev’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, indicated that if upcoming matches go their way, it’s highly possible we could see Islam Makhachev defend his lightweight title against Conor McGregor by the end of 2024. This hinges on McGregor’s performance against Michael Chandler at UFC 303 later this month, and him emerging from the bout unscathed.

Ali Abdelaziz was optimistic about the potential matchup:

“It’s a crazy sport, Conor might go in there and knock Chandler out in the first round, and then you know he is one of the biggest stars in the sport. Love him or hate him, that’s who he is.”

“If he tells the UFC ‘Hey, I want a title fight, Islam wants a title fight’ – that could be your next title fight, Islam will not say no, he will not say no to this fight.”

The Biggest UFC Fight Since McGregor vs. Nurmagomedov?

Abdelaziz also acknowledged the financial appeal of such a matchup, reminiscent of the massive McGregor vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov fight:

“If there’s one thing I know about Dana White, it’s that he likes money and he likes business – that’s why the UFC is so big right now. They are brilliant and they arrange the biggest fights where they can sell the most PPV’s, so why not?”

McGregor’s Potential Leapfrog in the Title Queue

Should Makhachev’s next fight be against ‘The Notorious,’ it would likely sideline championship ambitions for other top contenders like Arman Tsarukyan. Given McGregor’s star power and the history between him and Makhachev’s mentor Khabib, the UFC would undoubtedly favor the Irish superstar for a title shot.

Abdelaziz recognized McGregor’s undeniable star status:

“It’s a big fight, it’s a big name, it’s a lot more money and in the end, people fight to leave a mark, but if they don’t get paid, they won’t fight. It’s about making money, that’s what it is. The guy is a huge star, I think he’s an asshole, but he’s a huge star, you can’t take that away from him.”

Despite the excitement, Makhachev himself has pointed out two major hurdles for McGregor—his lifestyle and current condition. Makhachev noted McGregor’s decline since their last bout, attributing it to “too much alcohol, too much whiskey” and emphasized that everyone knows “this guy is not the same”
