Jon Jones Eyes Alex Pereira, Sidelines Aspinall

"Jones Eyes Pereira, Overlooks Aspinall"

Aspinall’s Dilemma

Tom Aspinall, the UFC interim heavyweight champion, finds himself in an uncertain position regarding his next fight. Despite holding the interim title, Aspinall is unclear about his future opponent, as the reigning heavyweight champion Jon Jones has set his sights elsewhere.

Jones’ New Target

Jon Jones, the current heavyweight king, is poised to return against Stipe Miocic. Victory for Jones has led many to assume Aspinall would be next in line. However, Jones has recently expressed a strong interest in a blockbuster title fight against light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira, dubbing it “the biggest fight in MMA history.” This shift in focus has made a matchup against Aspinall increasingly unlikely.

Aspinall’s Perspective

In an interview with TNT Sports, Tom Aspinall shared his thoughts on Jones’ preference for Pereira over him. “If we can get our old friend Jon to ever sign a contract with my name on the other side, I’ll talk about him on this show for hours,” Aspinall stated. He continued, expressing frustration over Jones’ tactics to shape public perception to his advantage. “Right now, he’s playing games again, trying to convince the public what he wants and does not want. And he’s very good at it,” Aspinall added.

Uncertain Times Ahead

Aspinall is scheduled to defend his interim title at UFC 304 on July 27 in Manchester. However, he remains in the dark about his opponent. “The last I knew, it was supposed to be announced this weekend at UFC 301, and obviously, that has come and gone now,” Aspinall explained. With no clear contender in sight, the interim champion is focused solely on preparing for the date, regardless of who he might face.
