Paulo Costa Targets Kamaru Usman After UFC 298 Display
Following a commendable performance at UFC 298 against former champion Robert Whittaker, Brazilian fighter Paulo Costa is setting his sights on a new challenge for 2024. Despite a points loss after three intense rounds, Costa, known as “Borrachinha,” nearly finished Whittaker in the final moments of the first round, demonstrating significant prowess after a hiatus of almost eighteen months.
Costa’s record now shows three losses in his last four fights, a stark contrast to his undefeated streak that included victories over fighters like Yoel Romero and Uriah Hall. In dire need of a win, Costa is shifting focus from a potential match with Khamzat Chimaev to former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman. On X (formerly Twitter), Costa expressed his interest in a middleweight bout with Usman, stating, “Gourmet Chen Chen couldn’t finish him even on short notice. I believe I can.”
Usman, coming off a majority decision loss to Chimaev at UFC 294 in a closely contested fight, now faces three consecutive defeats against top-tier opponents. His future in the sport remains uncertain as he has yet to respond to Costa’s challenge.
