UFC Legend Embraces Power Slap Mania

I love it," declares Cowboy on Power Slap.

UFC veteran Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone has declared his love for Dana White’s controversial Power Slap League, albeit with a hint of irony. Attending the sixth event of this unique competition, Cerrone’s enthusiasm was palpable. “I love it,” he exclaimed, pointing to the unrelenting knockouts and the stark reality of combat sports’ risks, including Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) and other brain injuries, as a twisted form of entertainment for those inclined.

Despite facing significant backlash, the UFC continues to promote Power Slap vigorously, leveraging its platform and fighters to draw attention to the slap fighting spectacle. Critics argue the format’s inherent danger, emphasizing the inability of competitors to defend themselves, a foundational rule of the sport. The Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) sanctioned Power Slap in October 2022, a decision that has since been regretted by former officials expressing discontent with its approval.

“I love it,” said Donald Cerrone. “If you just want to see knockout after knockout and hear about CTE and brain injuries, then this is your kind of event.”

“Not even I would do this,” said Cerrone with a laugh.

Cerrone’s Take on Competing

With an illustrious career in MMA, including memorable stints in both WEC and UFC and a UFC Hall of Fame induction in 2023, Cerrone, who retired in July 2022, laughed off any suggestion of participating in Power Slap himself. “Not even I would do this,” he commented, reflecting both admiration for the sport and recognition of its extreme nature.
