Khamzat Chimaev Gets Top Ranked Fighter – But Not This Year
UFC star Khamzat Chimaev looks to book his biggest fight till this day, but fans have to wait until 2022! The raising star has been linked with the UFC top two ranked Gilbert Burns in a welterweight clash in January 2022.
– Nothing is clear, but [the match] will probably be booked, reports Frontkick.online. The plan seems to be January rather than December, but again, nothing has been signed or carved in stone right now.
In another post it states that Khamzat vs. Burns bout are in discussions and “will most likely happen” even if nothing is finalized or official yet.
There has been a lot of hype about Khamzat’s next fight after he made his long-awaited comeback at UFC 267 on October 30th. The Swedish superstar “Borz” ran over the Chinese Li “The Leech” Jingliang quickly and is on everyone’s lips.
When the top ranked welterweight bout between Leon Edwards and Jorge Masvidal fell through earlier this week, Khamzat was one of the first fighters ready to jump in and replace an injured Masvidal. Despite pressure from fans, Edwards showed little interest in that replacement and has instead set his sight on a title fight.
UFC: Gilbert Burns vs Khamzat Chimaev
Khamzat is still undefeated in his professional MMA career with ten straight wins, all via finish. He made his UFC debut last year when he defeated his first two opponents in record breaking time. He then followed up with a spectacular knockout against Gerald Meerschaert in just 17 seconds. He was then tested positive for covid and got seriously ill, which threatened his UFC career and the organization flew him to Vegas for treatment.
The 35-year-old Brazilian Burns returned to the winning column when he defeated Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson during UFC 264 in July. Burns had previously challenged Kamaru Usman for the title, but was finished via TKO in the second round.
Burns previously competed in the lightweight class but has returned to the welterweight division at the end of 2019. He has since won five matches and was only defeated by the UFC champion Kamaru Usman.
At the time of writing, the UFC has two events scheduled in January 2022, a UFC Fight Night on January 15th and UFC 270: Ngannou vs. Gane on January 22nd.
It is still unclear whether the UFC would choose to place Burns vs Khamzat on any those cards or or put them in as main event bout on a different event.
