Kamaru Usman vs Gilbert Burns in the works for UFC 256
While not yet finalised, the UFC is working on another welterweight title fight. The division’s champ Kamaru Usman is set to defend his title against his team mate Gilbert Burns at UFC 256 on December 12th. The bout is not yet official, and Burns was supposedly unaware of the plans, but expressed willingness to finally fight for the title. The two are team mates who have trained together on several occasions.
The two were supposed to fight at UFC 251, however Burns was forced out of the fight after contracting Covid-19. He was replaced by Jorge Masvidal on short notice.

So far Usman has yet to taste defeat in the UFC. Since his debut in the promotion in 2015 he got past the likes of Sergio Moraes and Rafael dos Anjos to earn a shot at the title. When the opportunity presented itself Usman didn’t disappoint, completely bulldozing former champion Tyron Woodley to win the welterweight title. He has since defended it twice against Colby Covington and Masvidal.
Burns currently sits on a six fight winning streak, including victories over Gunnar Nelson and Demian Maia. In his latest outing he faced Woodley, dominating every round of headliner, securing a shot at the title. The Brazilian is undefeated since returning to the welterweight division, and has never looked better in his career.
