Khabib issues heartbreaking statement after death of father: “I hope…”
The tragic death of Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, father of UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, has saddened the MMA community, but also brought it together. While people from all ends of the combat sports community have paid respects and given condolences, Khabib himself has remained silent, understnadably. Now, however, Khabib has issued a statement after the tragic passing of his father.
Taking to social media, Khabib left a heartfelt message for his father in several different languages.
“And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment,” Khabib wrote in the statement dedicated to his father. “Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], ‘uff,’ and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, ‘My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small.’”
Nurmagomedov then added a message written in Russian directed at Abdulmanap.
“You will be missed father, you were father, friend, brother and coach in one person. You taught me almost everything I know, I hope that you were happy with me. The contentment of parents is the contentment of Allah,” the second paragraph read (via Google Translate)

Initially, before Abdulmanap’s passing, Khabib was scheduled to unify his lightweight title with interim champion Justin Gaethje on September 12th. However those plans are much less set in stone as of now. Both UFC president Dana White and Khabib’s manager Ali Abdelaziz expect the lightweight champ to return in 2020, though it’s not clear as to exactly when.
Regardless, it’s apparent how important Abdulmanap was for Khabib. They shared a bond that spanned several different relations, and the lightweight champion should take the time that is needed before returning.
