Pedro Munhoz tests positive for Covid-19 – Frankie Edgar bout cancelled

Top bantamweight contenders willing to fill in against the former champ

The world has undoubtedly changed as the global pandemic has become part of our everyday lives. Now, top 15 ranked Pedro Munhoz has been forced out of his bout with former lightweight champ Frankie Edgar after testing positive for Covid-19. The two were scheduled to meet at UFC Fight Night 172 on July 16th, which would entail Edgar’s debut at bantamweight.

“Sorry to hear you had a positive test (Pedro Munhoz) wish you a speedy recovery let know as soon as you’re ready to scrap, I’ll be waiting,” Edgar wrote on Twitter.

While Munhoz pulling out definitely is a blow to the card, the UFC are working on salvaging the fight- According to Ariel Helwani, the UFC are searching for a replacement who can fill in against Edgar.

So far there have been several fighters willing to throw their name in the hat. Marlon Vera, Ricky Simon and Aljamain Sterling have all showed interest in facing the former lightweight champion.

Edgar is currently in a tough spot, as the move to bantamweight was made in order to reinvigorate his career. After a third failed attempt to capture the UFC featherweight title, he was brutally knocked out by “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung in his subsequent bout. With losses in three out of his last four bouts, a win in his next outing is imperative if he wishes to remain at the top of the division he competes in.
