Official: Jorge Masvidal to challenge Kamaru Usman for title at UFC 251
After last minute negotiations were successful, this weekend’s original UFC main event has been salvaged. Jorge Masvidal will step up on a weeks notice to face Kamaru Usman for the welterweight title at UFC 251. Gilbert Burns was originally scheduled to challenge Usman, but was forced out of the fight after contracting Covid-19.
Usman currently holds an amazing 11 fight winning streak, and has yet to taste defeat in the UFC. On his way to reach the top he managed to dispatch the likes of Sergio Moraes and Rafael dos Anjos. Last year he challenged Tyron Woodley for the welterweight title, pulling off a big upset by completely bulldozing te former champ to win the title. In december of 2019 Usman made his first title defence, defeating Colby Covington via TKO.
Masvidal has been quietly racking up impressive wins during his 16 year career. 2019 truly was the breakout year for Masvidal though, as he reached stardom he’s never seen before. He began last year with a brutal KO win over Darren Till in London, following up with a five second knockout of Ben Askren. He then headlined UFC 244, finishing Nate Diaz via TKO to win the UFC BMF title.
