Jon Jones seeks opponent for catchweight exhibition fight

Jon Jones is taking a future move to heavyweight seriously, and wants an opponent at catchweight first to test the waters. 

When all is said and done, despite a string of controversies, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones will undoubtedly be seen as one of the best MMA fighters of all time. His list of accomplishments is long and storied, with victories over pretty much every viable contender at light heavyweight. That is in part what has inspired a potential move up to heavyweight. Jones has spoken about it many times, and now seems to be in the planning phase.

Jones recently made a post on Twitter, seeking an opponent for a 220 lbs catchweight bout, so that he can begin a move to heavyweight.

“I’d love to have an exhibition fight at the catchweight of 220lbs before moving up to heavyweight,” Jones wrote. “Who wants to take that L?”

The proposed move to heavyweight can seem puzzling, as there are solid contenders In his most recent title defence at UFC 247, Jones went five hard fought rounds with Dominick Reyes. While the judges would award Jones a unanimous decision win, the victory was disputed by many. The challenger pressured Jones early, and many felt that Reyes won the first three rounds. It was a tightly contested fight that many felt warranted a rematch.

In February of this yeah Polish striker Jan Blachowicz knocked out Corey Anderson in the first round at UFC Rio Rancho. That was the Pole’s third straight win over strong competition, and second via KO. Blachowicz called Jones out following the win, which the light heavyweight champ accepted.

The UFC have not commented on Jones’ next fight, though there are certainly a slew of potential opponents for the light heavyweight king.
