Conor McGregor snaps at Dustin Poirier – Deletes tweet after response
UFC superstar Conor McGregor promptly deleted his diss towards Dustin Poirier after the stinging clap back he received.
Despite many fighters return status somewhat unclear, the fight game continues. UFC 249 takes place this weekend, signifying a small step towards normalcy. However a large part of the fight game is verbal and mental warfare, taking shots at opponents and asserting dominance. These verbal challenges come at a cost if done openly though, as your words will always be seen and saved by the slew of fans that see it.
However this can backfire, as Irish trash talk king Conor McGregor learned after taking aim at former foe Dustin Poirier – and eventually deleted his first tweet. McGregor took to Twitter, openly questioning why Louisiana’s Poirier is ahead of him in the official UFC rankings.
“How is the pea ahead of me in rankings?” McGregor wrote in a now-deleted aimed at Poirier “I sparked him in 90 seconds. Went further against most recent foe, plus took a round. After two year layoff partying and or in jail/court.
“What a weird little game you guys play. I’ll bide my time for now but watch this space. All bums.”

McGregor is somewhat correct, as he TKO’d Poirier in the first round when they first met at UFC 178 in 2014. However, the response was swift. Poirier was cold and calculated in pointing out the level of competition they’ve been facing recently.

“Because I’ve been fighting real contenders and you’ve been hand picking opponents,” Poirier responded.
Poirier was most likely referring to McGregor’s most recent bout with Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, which Poirier had been critical of. There is certainly credence to that criticism, as McGregor TKO’d Cerrone in just 40 seconds at UFC 246. That was the only win the the Irishman has recorded since 2016. Meanwhile Poirier has faced a murderous row of opponents in the past few years. The American has dispatched the likes of top contenders such as Justin Gaethje and Eddie Alvarez, before defeating former featherweight champion Max Holloway to win the interim lightweight champion.
Poirier has been interested in facing McGregor a second time. Since their first meeting both have gone on to win titles and become substantially better and more well-rounded fighters.
