“Cowboy” Cerrone still heartbroken after Conor McGregor loss: “Still hurt”
Not once to mince words, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone admits that he was heartbroken in his defeat against Conor McGregor.
UFC 246 became one of the biggest MMA shows of the year, solely based on the success of the main event. While the drawing power of Holly Holm vs Raquel Pennington 2 in question, the headliner certainly delivered. UFC superstar Conor McGregor returned and stole the show, finishing Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, in just 40 seconds.
While most of the focused laid on McGregor following the fight, many forgot about Cerrone, who was left with loss and heartbreak following the biggest fight of his life.
“My brain was definitely rattled from the ass-whooping I took in 40 seconds,” Cerrone told MMA Fighting. “But I feel good. My eye healed up enough. My heart is still hurt, but that’s what makes it a man’s sport. We go in there and figure it out.”

The swiftness of the loss coupled with the extra attention the bout brought certainly stung “Cowboy”. While he admits that it still hurts, being so soundly defeated in front of so many people, he’s more than willing to learn and improve from it.
“That’s the only thing you can do is to suck it up and keep moving,” he said. “I can’t dwell on that. Can’t sit and worry about all that. I had my moment. I let it go, but at the end of the day, I got in there and did it. I stood with one of the best and I’m proud.
“I’m proud of what I’ve become in the sport. I’m proud as a father. It’s what I do. I give people hope and I keep fighting. That’s how we do it.”
To keep on fighting is indeed what Cerrone plans. He is as of now scheduled to face Anthony Pettis at UFC 249 on May 9th. It is a rematch from their 2013 bout at UFC on FOX 6. In their first meeting, Pettis won via first round TKO, though both are in desperate need of a win now. Cerrone sits on a three fight losing streak, whereas Pettis has lost two straight bouts.
