Jon Jones releases statement on DWI, arrest: “Truly disappointed”

"I want to express how truly disappointed I am..."

After a lenient sentence given after a string of charges, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has pleaded guilty, reached a plea deal and released a statement on his actions.

Jones was arrested for aggravated DWI as well as negligent use of a firearm early morning of March 26th. Jones confessed to having driven under the influence of alcohol with the intent to continue driving, amongst other charges. He was, however, recently freed of any jail time despite his numerous offences. The light heavyweight champ received 96 hours of community custody (house arrest), one year of supervised probation, a minimum 90 days of outpatient therapy.

On Tuesday Jones released a statement via his management team. This was the first time he had done so since his arrest last week.

“While we all work to understand and cope with stress and uncertainties surrounding the current state of our world, I want to express how truly disappointed I am that I have become the source of a negative headline again, especially during these trying times,” Jon Jones statement said. “I am disappointed for letting down the people I care about the most – my family, friends and my fans. This morning I entered into a plea deal with the Albuquerque DA’s office. I accept full responsibility for my actions, and I know that I have some personal work to do, which involves the unhealthy relationship I have with alcohol.”

While indisputably one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time, Jones is also a fighter known for controversy. He has had previous transgressions with the law, such as a DUI and a hit-and-run involving a pregnant woman. He has also tested positive for banned substances and got into a fight with rival Daniel Cormier at a press conference.

While his greatness as a fighter is without question, his other issues seem just as apparent.
