Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier continue trading shots on social media
At UFC 178 in Las Vegas, 2014, a then up-and-coming Conor McGregor faced his toughest test against seasoned featherweight staple; Dustin Poirier. As most know now, it ended in a first round TKO win for McGregor, who clipped in opponent behind the ear and finished the fight. Since Poirier’s valiant but losing effort to claim the lightweight title against Khabib Nurmagomedov, he suggested a rematch with McGregor – getting a less than encouraging response from the Irishman.
I fed you to the canvas in 90 seconds bro.
You should have spoke my name with a bit more respect in that build up. “McGregor’s not next”
Motherfucker, it’s McGregor always!
McGregor is the goal! Always!
Say that now and I’ll think about it.#GoneIn90seconds #NicCage #AJolie— Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) September 10, 2019

The barbs didn’t stop there, though. McGregor then decided to rub salt in the wounds of Poirier, but posting a picture of the ending sequence of their 2014 bout. Poirier once again asked for a rematch, convinced the results would be different a second time around.
Run it back tough guy!

Both former featherweight fighters have competed in lightweight or higher in the last few years. Poirier moved up to lightweight after the loss to McGregor, with fantastic results, going on a 9-1, 1 NC run, earning him the interim lightweight title and a shot at Nurmagomedov. He was, however, forced to tap to a rear naked choke in the third round at UFC 242.
McGregor hasn’t fought in the UFC since his fourth round submission loss to Nurmagomedov at UFC 229. He has, surprisingly enough, verbally agreed to a boxing match with Irish champion Luke Keeler.
