Tyron Woodley wants to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov: “Do it at a catchweight”
If you want to build a legendary legacy, it seems the man to beat in the lighter UFC weight divisions is Khabib Nurmagomedov. While not just at the top of all UFC lightweights list, fighters from other divisions are also gunning for the Dagestani champion. One of those is former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, who respectfully issued a challenge.
“I want to fight Khabib,” Woodley told TMZ. “I got the best takedown defense in the history of the sport. He’s dope, man. There’s not too many guys around like that. He’s a once in a lifetime. I’m a fan of his.“

It seems that Woodley believes his takedown defense would be enough to thwart the offensive grappling from Nurmagomedov. As of now, Nurmagomedov possesses some of the most suffocating grappling and brutal ground and pound in the sport.
The fact remains, however, that Woodley is a welterweight while Nurmagomedov fights at lightweight. Despite this Woodley seems convinced that Nurmagomedov’s days at lightweight are numbered.
“You know the good thing about it is he got one or two more fights in that division that make sense for him,” Woodley said. “He struggles to make 155. I got to get my belt back for this fight to make sense. He won’t even have to come up. We can do it at a catchweight, 165. I barely can make it but for the right bag…”
As of now Woodley does not have a fight booked. He was scheduled to face Robbie Lawler at UFC on ESPN 5. The bout would have been a rematch from their meeting at UFC 201, where Woodley knocked Lawler out in the first round to win the welterweight championship. Woodley defended his title four times before being dominated for five rounds by the new and current champ; Kamaru Usman.
