Jorge Masvidal open to fighting Nate Diaz: “In a heartbeat”
Jorge Masvidal vs Nate Diaz? The former is definitely up for signing the contract.
No welterweight has risen to stardom quicker and more explosively as of late than Jorge Masvidal. He now has two straight knockout wins and has transcended to a new level of fighter, reaching mainstream appeal. He now has offers and opportunities he hadn’t before, and while he’s certainly earned the right to be selective, he wouldn’t hesitate in accepting a fight with Nate Diaz.
In an interview with The Mac Life, Masvidal was asked about a potential bout with Diaz, and if the former gets to decide it’s a fight to make.
“In a heartbeat, we’re signing,” Masvidal said. “I’ve been chasing the belt for 16 years, but that’s such a fight for me, for the fans, for the sport, and it’s two Latin dogs just going at it. We haven’t seen that in the sport too much. We need to see it. You’re just going to lock up two dogs in the cage and let them go. Let’s find out what happens. That’s a fight I would love. If that fight gets offered, we’re taking it.”

Masvidal’s name is undoubtedly in the mix in regards to future title contenders. Despite this his friend and team mate Colby Covington may very well have leapfrogged him after steamrolling former champ Robbie Lawler. With all top contenders aiming at reigning welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, a bout with Diaz is one of few potential matches that could alter Masvidal’s coarse.
“I want the fights that will push me over the top,” Masvidal said. “The title for me means everything because I don’t have it, but Kamaru’s not like a dangerous dude. It’s not a fight that I’m scared to get hurt in. A guy like Nate, I know he’s going to try to rip my head off. He’s going to try to take my soul. So those big fights like that motivate me to work out, to get in there.”
As of now Masvidal does not have a fight booked, and despite his wishes it’s likely that he will get offered a fight other than a title shot. Diaz takes on former lightweight champ Anthony Pettis in a welterweight bout in the co-main event in tonight’s UFC 241.
