Georges St-Pierre Reportedly Set to Announce His Retirement on Thursday
Former two-division UFC champion Georges St-Pierre will reportedly retire from the sport of mixed martial arts at a press conference scheduled for Thursday.
The Canadian superstar has planned the news conference at the Bell Centre in his native Montreal, which was the location of many of the biggest fights during his UFC career.
News of St-Pierre’s pending retirement were first reported by RDS on Wednesday.
According to additional reports, St-Pierre was initially holding out hope for one more massive fight against reigning lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov but apparently negotiations never came to fruition for that matchup.
Just after news broke about St-Pierre’s plan to retire, Nurmnagomedov sent out one more plea to the former champion asking him to meet in November.
If St-Pierre does call it a career this week, he walks away as one of the most accomplished and revered athletes in the history of the sport.
St-Pierre was the longest reigning welterweight champion in UFC history while holding the title on two separate occasions.
St-Pierre never actually lost his belt in the cage as he surrendered the championship following his ninth consecutive defense back in 2013.
St-Pierre took a long sabbatical from the sport following that last fight in 2013 and he didn’t return until 2017 when he defeated Michael Bipsing to become UFC middleweight champion.
St-Pierre then relinquished that title a few weeks later and hasn’t fought since that time.
If St-Pierre truly calls it a career, he will leave the sport off 13 straight wins, nine consecutive title defenses at welterweight and adding a second title to his resume after winning the middleweight belt in 2017.
