Daniel Cormier Might Try To Stop Jones v Gustafsson Being For The UFC Title
Hold your horses, there’s a chance that Jon Jones vs Alexander Gustafsson might not be for the official UFC light heavyweight title after all.
The UFC light heavyweight title is currently held by Daniel Cormier who won the title back in Oct. 2015 when he defeated Anthony Jonhson via third-round submission. Cormier has been an active champion ever since having defended it three times and also faced Jones in a bout where he later retained the title after it was revealed that Jones tested positive in a fight week doping test.
Despite Cormier’s activity, the UFC recently annonced that Jones and Gustafsson is square-off for Cormier title on Dec. 29 when the two meet in the main event of UFC 232 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
However, that plan could hit a stumbling block should Cormier lose his UFC heavyweight title to Derrick Lewis at UFC 230 on Nov. 3. Speaking at a recent media scrum, Cormier implied that should he lose to Lewis, he would refocus his efforts back on defending his 205-pounds title.
“If I lost to Derrick, then who’s to say I don’t go, ‘Hey, I’m going to go defend my light heavyweight title,'” Cormier said (H/T MMA Weekly transcribe). “Now you can’t take it. Maybe that adds a whole other part to the equation. You can’t take both of my belts if I lost that one.
“I am the light heavyweight champion until those guys fight,” he continued. “If the light heavyweight champion loses his heavyweight title, well, wait, I’m willing to defend my belt. Now we have some conversations to have.”
