Referee, Judges Selected for Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor at UFC 229

UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor are scheduled to meet in less than two weeks time and the officials overseeing the fight have been selected.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission voted on the referee and judges who will be handling the fight during a meeting in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

Veteran referee Herb Dean was selected to serve as the third man in the Octagon to oversee the fight between Nurmagomedov and McGregor.

Dean has served as the referee in dozens of past main events in the UFC including fights for both McGregor and Nurmagomedov.

Meanwhile, Derek Cleary, Sal D’Amato and Junichiro Kamijo will be the judges in charge of scoring the fight from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

McGregor has only gone to decision on two previous occasions in the UFC, although Cleary did judge one of those fights. He scored McGregor’s rematch against Nate Diaz 48-47 in favor of the Irishman, who ultimately won a majority decision at UFC 202.

UFC 229 is expected to be the biggest card of the year for the promotion with UFC president Dana White stating last week that current trends put the event at around 2.5 million pay-per-view buys.

If that prediction holds up, the card headlined by Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor will shatter the previous pay-per-view record currently held buy UFC 202 that clocked in at approximately 1.6 million buys in 2016.
