Khabib Nurmagomedov Explains Why He Didn’t Confront Conor McGregor At The World Cup Final

UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has explained why he didn't confront Conor McGregor at the world cup final.

Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov both attended the 2018 FIFA World Cup final on Sunday and after what went down in Brooklyn, New York earlier this year, it came as a surprise to some people that there was confrontation.

After posting a cryptic “the Russian compound is taking shape” tweet early on Sunday morning, McGregor proceeded to take in the final of the world cup in the hospitality section of the Luzhniki Stadium and then take pictures with Russian political figurehead Vladimir Putin.

Many thought that McGregor’s behaviour would spark an incident between himself and Nurmagomedov on Sunday, however, speaking with Championat.com, the current UFC lightweight champion explained why nothing went down.

“I thought I’d meet McGregor at the Luzhniki Stadium,” Nurmagomedov told Championat (transcribed and translated by Express.co.uk).

“But even if we meet now, we still will not be able to find out who is stronger.

“If there was a cage in the middle of the arena, it would be more interesting. And now something to find out on the street and so on. We are not at that age and not in that position.

“It would be ideal if there were no one around. Or vice versa: to the full stadium, in the middle of the cage, and in it. In general, I see no reason to approach him now. We are hospitable people.”

McGregor and Nurmagomedov are rumoured to be heading for a showdown on Oct. 6 at UFC 229 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

However, nothing will likely be made official until McGregor has settled his ongoing court battle stemming from the incident that took place in Brooklyn earlier this year.
