Leon Edwards Doesn’t Believe the UFC Will Ever Give Him a Fight Against Darren Till

Following his most recent win in the UFC, Leon Edwards wasted no time calling for a fight against fellow British welterweight Darren Till.

At the time, Till had been announced as the main event for the UFC’s first ever show in Liverpool and Edwards was more than anxious to turn the fight into an all United Kingdom showdown between two top welterweights from the country.

Unfortunately the UFC had other plans as Till was offered a fight against Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson while Edwards is set to compete in his first main event against Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone this weekend in Singapore.

As much as Edwards would have loved the opportunity to face Till in a fight that would have determined the best welterweight in England, he really wasn’t all that torn up that the matchup didn’t happen.

“I wasn’t disappointed,” Edwards said in an exclusive interview ahead of his fight against Cerrone. “The aim isn’t Darren Till. The aim is to be a world champion. That was just a simple call out to say I’m the best welterweight in England and that’s all that was.”

Till went onto win a somewhat controversial decision over Thompson in Liverpool, although the fight didn’t exactly deliver in terms of overall excitement. Till and Thompson only landed a combined 71 strikes over five rounds and it’s not likely either one will be adding that fight to a career highlight reel any time soon.

“I was cage side watching it and there was nothing that jumped off the page,” Edwards said about the fight. “Both guys didn’t want to hit each other. It was a lackluster performance from both guys to be fair. It was nothing special watching that fight.”

Now that the UFC has given Till a home fight in Liverpool, Edwards hopes a win over Cerrone will get him the same treatment as he hopes to get a card in Birmingham sooner rather than later.

Edwards isn’t too concerned about who he might face next assuming the fight against Cerrone goes his way, but he’s certain that the one name on the other end of the contract won’t be Darren Till.

“That fight would be a huge fight for England but I feel the UFC wouldn’t give me that fight,” Edwards said about facing Till. “They’re going to try to build both guys from what I’m hearing. That would be a good fight for the U.K. 100-percent but whoever is after this fight, whoever in the top 10, I’ll fight against.

“After going out there and performing against Donald Cerrone, my aim is anyone in the top 10.”
