Former UFC Title Contender Sara McMann Announces Pregnancy
Former UFC women’s bantamweight title contender Sara McMann will be sidelined for several months after announcing her pregnancy on Wednesday.
McMann, who has one daughter, explained her decision in an Instagram post where she broke the news while also adding that a nagging shoulder injury made this the perfect time to take a break from fighting to focus on her family.
“I’ve had bad shoulder injuries my last two fights (torn labrum and rotator cuffs in BOTH shoulders). I have to take time off to get healthy no matter what,” McMann said. “I’m 37 and I’m getting too close to the time of possibly not being able to conceive. We decided that it was the right time in all aspects.
“So, yes I will still be fighting. My body handles pregnancy very well and I am training thru the majority of it.”
McMann last fought in February when she fell by submission to Marion Reneau at the UFC on FOX event from Orlando.
The former Olympic silver medalist in wrestling said she’s already three months along in her pregnancy so it’s likely she’ll be able to return to action in mid-2019.
McMann joins a growing list of UFC moms who have had children while still maintaining an active fight career. Fellow title contender Alexis Davis and ‘Ultimate Fighter’ winner Julianna Pena both had children in recent years as well.
