Michael Bisping: ‘It’s Laughable’ That Dillon Danis Is Trying So Hard to Be Conor McGregor
Michael Bisping knows a thing or two about ruffling feathers before a fight but even he’s not immune from being bothered by someone with a loud mouth.
That’s exactly how Bisping feels about new Bellator fighter Dillon Danis, who kicked off his mixed martial arts career this past weekend with a toe hold submission win over Kyle Walker.
Danis has been one of the more vocal fighters in interviews and over social media after first coming to prominence when he joined Conor McGregor’s training camp ahead of his rematch with Nate Diaz in 2016. Since that time, Danis has become a constant teammate of McGregor while seemingly emulating his famous friend while building his own career while preparing for his MMA debut.
Of course, Bisping has no problem with anybody getting attention so people will watch a fight but he doesn’t seem to enjoy the way that Danis is going about it where he’s basically a carbon copy of McGregor except not nearly as good.
“I don’t know Dillon Danis. Apparently, he’s a hot shot from the jiu-jitsu world and if he is good for him. Apparently, one of the best in the world, which is amazing, which is incredible, obviously has a lot of skill,” Bisping said about Danis on his “Believe You Me” podcast this week. “But jiu-jitsu and MMA are two very, very different things and he’s quite famously Conor McGregor’s jiu-jitsu coach and not only is he Conor McGregor’s jiu-jitsu coach, he’s seeming to try and morph and copy McGregor’s antics. Certainly his clothing, although Conor does wear some f–king really nice cool s–t. Dillon Danis is like the poor, second hand overwashed, hand me down version because his clothes are f–king terrible. But he’s trying to be Conor so hard it’s laughable.
“He even said after this weekend, ‘I will own Bellator’. That sounds vaguely like a like where Conor said ‘I will own boxing’.”
From the sound of things, Bisping’s biggest problem with Danis talking such a loud game is that he hasn’t earned it whatsoever after getting his first win over an opponent who now stands with a 2-5 record in his career.
“He got the job done, again that was really quick. He got a toe hold in like 90 seconds. Well done, can’t hate too much but god bless him, he’s 1-0 against someone I’ve never heard of,” Bisping said. “It’s like come on, slow your roll, pal.
“God bless you, well done, good job, excellent MMA debut against someone I’ve never heard of but there’s world class fighters out there, buddy.”
Bisping admits that Danis is doing something right if he’s getting people to pay attention to him when he’s admittedly not a veteran much less competing against opponents at the highest level despite fighting in Bellator MMA.
In that aspect, Bisping can’t fault Danis for doing what he’s doing but at the same time he wishes the former grappling champion would be a little more original than sniping his style from a notorious teammate.
“Definitely making headlines,” Bisping said about Danis. “Doesn’t mean you can’t find that person annoying. Doesn’t mean he’s not an irritating, annoying f–k that is purely ripping off his teammate and friend.”
