Paul Felder: It’s Time for Conor McGregor To Decide What’s Next So Lightweight Division Can Move Forward
UFC president Dana White has said that the moment a punch is thrown in the UFC 223 main event between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Max Holloway that a new undisputed lightweight champion will be crowned.
That means current champion Conor McGregor would be stripped of his title at the start of the fight, but just because he won’t have a belt doesn’t mean that the 29-year old Irish superstar is suddenly irrelevant.
In fact, Paul Felder, who fights Al Iaquinta in a lightweight showdown at UFC 223, says no matter what anybody else might be chirping about, McGregor’s next move will have a huge impact on the division.
Even without the belt, McGregor could come back and decide that he wants to face the winner of Holloway and Nurmagomedov and there’s little doubt the UFC would book that fight. Then again there’s a chance that perhaps McGregor would choose to go for a trilogy against Nate Diaz or pursue a huge payday for a mixed martial arts fight against Floyd Mayweather.
Nobody knows for certain and that’s the problem according to Felder, who explained why McGregor’s next move is so huge for the lightweight division as a whole.
