Floyd Mayweather Plans to Apply for MMA Fight License
Floyd Mayweather continues to tease his move into mixed martial arts by now saying that plans to apply for a license to compete in the sport in the near future.
For several months now, Mayweather has been dropping all sorts of hints about a potential fight in the UFC including several videos that showed him stepping inside a cage as well as taunts aimed at lightweight champion Conor McGregor over social media.
Just recently, Mayweather teamed up with UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, who plans to help the retired boxer get ready for his mixed martial arts debut.
Now Mayweather has confirmed that he plans to apply for a license to compete in MMA as he continues to explore the option to crossover from boxing.
“Not yet. Everything takes time. Eventually, we’re going to apply for the license and hopefully we can fight,” Mayweather told TMZ about his fight license.
Now a license to compete in MMA won’t likely be a problem for Mayweather the same way McGregor and fellow UFC fighter Nate Diaz both applied for and received licenses to compete in boxing. Diaz received his boxing license and still has never strapped on the gloves and actually taken a professional match.
In other words, Mayweather could get a license to compete in MMA in every state in America but that doesn’t actually mean he’s going to fight.
That being said, Mayweather sounds serious about pursuing this option as he begins plotting a course for a training schedule that will get him ready for all the weapons an MMA fighter might throw at him.
Mayweather promises if he makes his debut in the UFC, he’s going to do it with full confidence that he’s going in there to win.
“Probably a little bit longer [than three months],’ Mayweather said about how long he’ll take to get ready for a UFC fight. “Even if it takes six to eight months, whatever it takes, we’re going to make sure that everything is done correctly and everything is done the right way.
