Conor McGregor Says He Offered To Fight Frankie Edgar At UFC 222

Conor McGregor has revealed this evening that he offered to fight Frankie Edgar at UFC 222 on March 3

Conor McGregor has issued a statement via his Instagram this evening and he’s made it clear to the world that he’s back and ready to start fighting again.

Just a few weeks ago, the news broke that UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway had pulled out of his scheduled bout with Frankie Edgar after sustaining an injury during training. A number of replacements put their names forward to fill the void left by the 145-pound champion, but Brian Ortega eventually got the nod and he will fight Edgar at the T-Mobile Arena on Saturday week.

McGregor’s name was never included in the speculation to face Edgar on March 3, but on his Instagram account this evening, the UFC lightweight champion made it perfectly clear to the world that he offered to step up and fight Edgar on just a few weeks notice.

I am the best at this.
I put my name forward to step in at UFC 222 to face Frankie Edgar when Max Holloway pulled out, but I was told there wasn’t enough time to generate the money that the UFC would need.
I was excited about bouncing in last minute and taking out the final featherweight, without all the rest of the stuff that comes with this game. Please respect the insane amount of work outside the fight game that I have put in.
On top of the fighting.
I am here.
It is on them to come and get me. Because I am here.
Yours sincerely,
The Champ Champ™

McGregor hasn’t fought in the UFC since UFC 205 when he defeated Eddie Alvarez for the UFC lightweight title in 2016. A fight between him and Edgar was often talked about during his days fighting at 145-pounds, but the fight between the two never materialized.

This latest statement would suggest that the Irishman is wanting to return to the UFC Octagon sooner rather than later. No doubt he will have one keen eye on the upcoming Tony Ferguson vs Khabib Nurmagomedov fight taking place at UFC 223 on April 7.
