Cris Cyborg Agrees to Face Amanda Nunes, Wants Fight on International Fight Week

Cris Cyborg is ready to accept a fight against Amanda Nunes.

The proposed matchup that would pit the UFC’s women’s featherweight champion against the women’s bantamweight champion is one step closer to completion with Cyborg saying she has agreed to the matchup under one condition.

Cyborg wants the fight with Nunes to take place during International Fight Week in Las Vegas in July, which is typically one of the biggest cards of the year for the UFC.

“I have agreed to fight Amanda Nunes July 7 in Las Vegas as part of UFC 226 and International Fight Week,” Cyborg wrote on Monday. “I am now waiting for my manager to work with the UFC on a bout agreement so we can make Cyborg vs. Nunes, the super fight, official.”

UFC president Dana White has said for weeks that he wanted to book the matchup between Cyborg and Nunes for later this year but at first the women’s featherweight champion scoffed at the idea.

Cyborg preferred to face a legitimate contender at 145 pounds instead with hopes of building the featherweight division in the UFC. Of course, Cyborg also stated that she would face Nunes as long as the matchup took place on a marquee card and the event in July is one of the biggest annually.

Obviously Cyborg’s offer is contingent on the UFC decided to put the fight on that date as well as Nunes agreeing to that timing in July.

Still it’s one step closer towards booking one of the biggest women’s mixed martial arts fights in history as Cyborg has long been recognized as the best pound-for-pound women’s fighter in the sport while Nunes is a two-time defending champion with wins over Miesha Tate, Ronda Rousey and Valentina Shevchenko over the past two years.
