Cub Swanson Fielding Offers from UFC and Other Promotions as Free Agency Begins

Cub Swanson is officially playing the field.

The veteran featherweight contender who just recently fought out the final bout on his last UFC contract has entered free agency and he’s currently exploring options from all viable contenders.

According to Swanson, he received a new contract offer from the UFC following his second round submission loss to Brian Ortega this past December that brought an end to his recent four-fight win streak. Swanson gambled on himself to fight out his old contract to enter free agency to see what kind of offers he might receive on the open market.

Still, the UFC seemed determined to keep him on the roster and while Swanson has received a new offer from the company, he’s still not willing to sign with anyone just yet.

“I can’t make a decision until I know what the other offers are,” Swanson told the Desert Sun just recently.

Despite the setback in his last fight, Swanson would definitely be considered a high valued target for most promotions considering he’s been ranked as a top five featherweight in the UFC for several years while constantly putting on entertaining bouts whenever he steps inside the cage.

Swanson had complained ahead of his last fight that he felt his compensation with the UFC wasn’t in line with his veteran record and accomplishments while hinting that he was anxiously awaiting to find out what he was worth on the open market.

At 34, Swanson still has plenty of time left in the fight game but more importantly with his first child just born last year, he’s mostly concerned with providing a stable financial future for his family. That means Swanson will be looking at offers from all potential competitors in the mixed martial arts space, which obviously includes the UFC as well as several other promotions in the U.S. and beyond.

“The negotiations, it’s not about having fancy cars or anything,” Swanson said. “It’s about having financial stability for my family’s future. That’s it.”
