Matt Brown Would Consider Pushing Back Retirement to Finally Fight Carlos Condit
Matt Brown never forgot that he didn’t get the chance to fight Carlos Condit.
It was just over four years ago that Brown was matched up against Condit in a welterweight showdown with ‘Fight of the Night’ written all over it. Unfortunately, Brown suffered a back injury that knocked him out of the fight and the UFC ultimately pulled Condit from the card as well.
Sadly, the UFC never moved to rebook the fight so Brown and Condit both moved forward with their careers and their paths have never crossed again.
In recent months, Brown has been contemplating retirement but still hasn’t made any final decision whether he’s going to call it a career or potentially come back for at least one more fight. As for Condit, he was in a similar situation until he just made his return to action this past weekend at UFC 219 when he lost a decision to Neil Magny in his first fight back in 16 months.
With Condit back on the active roster again, Brown can’t deny that the idea of finally getting into the Octagon with the former UFC interim welterweight champion might be enough that he would push back his retirement to take at least one more fight.
“Maybe it’s time for me and him to lock horns,” Brown said on the latest Fight Society podcast. “I’d love to [fight him]. I’ve got so much respect for him. Of course I’d love to. Everybody would want to see that fight. It was supposed to happen before. We’ll see what happens.
“That’s definitely one people would want to see no matter what. I would be a fight for the ages. Now it would certainly be a fight that would make me want to come out of semi-retirement. I haven’t made any decisions on anything but that would be one that would probably wake me up and get me out of bed.”
Brown and Condit have combined for 13 post fight bonuses between them, including several awards for ‘Fight of the Night’ as well as ‘Knockout of the Night’ when that was still being awarded by the UFC.
Considering the crowd pleasing style both fighters put on display every time they fight, it’s easy to understand why the UFC might want to book Brown against Condit at some point later this year.
Brown knows the chance to face Condit would be more than enough motivation to get him back into a training camp so he’s just waiting on the call from the UFC to gauge their interest in finally making this fight happen.
“We’ll see what happens,” Brown said. “Maybe Sean Shelby will be listening in and give me a call next week.”
