Stipe Miocic Expected to Defend Heavyweight Title Against Francis Ngannou at UFC 220

A huge heavyweight title fight may be headed to Boston.

A deal is nearly done that will see heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic take on No. 1 ranked contender Francis Ngannou at UFC 220 in Boston on Jan. 20.

Sources close to the matchup confirmed the news on Wednesday following an initial report from MMAJunkie. At this time, UFC officials have not made any announcements regarding the fight.

If the fight is finalized, the UFC could have the most intriguing heavyweight title fight on deck since Cain Velasquez faced Junior dos Santos back in 2011 when they helped kick off the promotion’s new television deal with FOX.

Miocic has already tied the all time record for title defenses in the UFC heavyweight division with a pair of knockouts against Alistair Overeem and Junior dos Santos in consecutive fights.

Meanwhile, Ngannou has turned into one of the most talked about fighters in all of mixed martial arts after his jaw-dropping knockout against Overeem this past weekend at UFC 218 in Detroit.

Immediately after the event was finished, UFC president Dana White confirmed Ngannou was the No. 1 contender for the title with hopes of booking him for a fight against Miocic in early 2018.

Now it appears a deal is nearly finalized with Miocic facing Ngannou in the main event at UFC 220 with light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier taking on Volkan Oezdemir in the co-main event.
