Dana White Mocks Ben Askren: ‘Is That Guy Still Around?’
Ben Askren retired last weekend after taking his undefeated record to 18-0, but he left leaving the door open to one more possible fight to prove that he’s #1 welterweight in the world outside of Tyron Woodley.
Just hours departed from his 57-second destruction of Shinya Aoki last Saturday, Askren engaged Georges St-Pierre on social media:
@GeorgesStPierre how’s the spring weather in Montreal? I hear it’s a nice time to test your true Martial Arts skills
— Ben Askren (@Benaskren) November 25, 2017
He then followed that up on Monday by speaking out on the MMA Hour to double down on his challenge.
“I wouldn’t fight Tyron Woodley, we go way, way back,” Askren said (h/t MMA Mania). “But there is this other guy who is a very famous welterweight named Georges St-Pierre who doesn’t seem to have a dance partner right now.”
“He doesn’t seem to want to fight Tyron or Robert Whittaker. So hey, he doesn’t want to get hit hard. I can’t hit that hard so we might as well get in there and get after it.”
Yesterday, reporters in Las Vegas attended a luncheon with UFC President, Dana White. The question was put to him whether he’d ever consider trying to put a fight together between Askren and St-Pierre. Suffice to say, the response he gave suggested there was very little chance of it happening.
“Is that guy still around?” White said whilst laughing.
“He retired? He’s such a huge star I’ll probably think about it…” White said with a sarcastic tone.
He then added: “You guys [the MMA media] know him, that’s it.”
Anyone holding out hope White might be open to the idea better think again.
