Dana White won’t shut the door on Conor McGregor boxing again
Conor McGregor will return to the UFC for his next fight but that doesn’t mean the reigning lightweight champion is giving up on boxing.
Ever since his 10th round TKO loss to Floyd Mayweather happened in August, McGregor has continuously mentioned taking another boxing match as highly probable at some point down the road.
Because McGregor is the biggest draw in combat sports today, it’s likely he’d have his choice of opponents if he ever decided to do boxing again but any crossover fight would still need the UFC’s blessing as he remains under contract with the mixed martial arts promotion.
Well as much as UFC president Dana White is anxious to get McGregor back into the Octagon again, even he can’t deny that another boxing match is a possibility in the future.
White admits he’d rather not go through with another boxing match with McGregor he’s not going to shut the door on the possibility either.
“He’s ready to get back into mixed martial arts. No, I wouldn’t want to do that again [with boxing] but never say never,” White told the Jim Rome podcast this week.
As far as what White expects out of McGregor for his return to the UFC, he’s excited to see what the 29-year old Irishman will do in his next fight that could still take place before the end of the year.
Of course, McGregor will return to the UFC after making the biggest payday of his career with figures reportedly north of $100 million for the fight with Mayweather back in August.
White knows how money can warp minds and change a fighter’s outlook so he’s curious to see how McGregor reacts now that he’s got enough money in the bank that he’d never have to even contemplate fighting again unless that’s truly what he wanted.
“That’s what we’ll see in his next fight,” White said about McGregor. “F–k you money is a real thing. It’s hard to be hungry when you’ve got that much money.”
