Ray Borg already planning for back-to-back fights against Demetrious Johnson
Ray Borg is no fool.
The 24-year old New Mexico native is walking into his main event fight against flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson as a decided underdog.
Some sports books have Johnson listed as a whopping 10-to-1 favorite over Borg, who is competing for his first UFC title at the same time he’s stepping into his first main event.
Borg knows the deck is stacked against him but that’s why he’s already preparing for the naysayers to discredit his win should he get past Johnson on Saturday night at UFC 215.
In fact, Borg is so confident that he will become the first fighter at 125-pounds to hand Johnson a loss that he’s got his victory speech ready to go with plans to offer the only flyweight champion in UFC history an automatic rematch.
“I’ve honestly even thought about what I was going to say after my fight,” Borg said ahead of his fight this weekend. “I always think about my winner’s speech and the very first thing I’m going to do after the fight is take my niece to Disneyland, I promised her a trip to Disneyland and then I’m going to go home immediately after and get ready to beat D.J. twice.
“That’s honestly how I see things playing out.”
Much like former middleweight champion Chris Weidman said ahead of his first fight against Anderson Silva, Borg is ready for his victory over Johnson to be called a fluke.
It’s part of the reason why Borg is already prepared to demolish his detractors by fighting Johnson a second time because that will be the only way to prove he truly is the best flyweight in the world.
“I see myself fighting him twice,” Borg said. “It’s one thing to beat Demetrious, it’s another to beat him twice. I’m going to go home and work harder the second time than I did the first time.”
And when it comes to hard work, Borg promises that he’s put in more hours in the gym for this camp than he’s ever done before.
It’s a cliché saying in mixed martial arts for fighters to say a training camp was the best of their career, but Borg promises that he left no stone unturned when getting ready to face the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the sport.
It’s just another reason why Borg can’t wait to hear ‘and new undisputed flyweight champion of the world’ when his work is done on Saturday night.
“This is the hardest I’ve ever worked for anything in my life. The timing is aligning perfect for me to beat D.J. Everything is right where it needs to be,” Borg said.
“A big thing that I’ve been telling people for the last few weeks, the way I’ve been training for this fight I find it hard to believe that anybody has ever wanted this fight the same way that I want this fight. This is something I’ve been working at my whole entire life. Go back and look at D.J.’s record. When has he fought someone as young and hungry as me? No one he’s ever fought is as hungry as I am.”
