Conor McGregor’s coach ‘heartbroken’ following loss to Floyd Mayweather
Conor McGregor will walk away from his fight with Floyd Mayweather a very rich man with the 29-year old Irishman expected to make north of $100 million for less than 30 minutes of total work.
In the fight, McGregor fell to Mayweather by 10th round TKO in a matchup that far exceeded expectations considering the UFC champion was making his professional boxing debut against arguably one of the best to ever lace up a pair of gloves in that sport.
As nice as the money will be once the final pay-per-view figures are compiled, McGregor’s striking coach Owen Roddy admits that they were preparing to go in there to get a win and nothing less.
So while McGregor will be cashing a nine-figure payday, Roddy says really it was all about beating Mayweather and unfortunately that didn’t happen.
“I was heartbroken,” Roddy told “The Late, Late Show” in Ireland. “I don’t only work with Conor — Conor’s a good friend of mine and we were training partners and sparring partners for many years and then I took up the coaching role. When you see what somebody puts in, the amount of hours he puts in. The amount of sacrifices that he makes and the team makes. When you see all that and you’re all working together for one moment for that night.
“It doesn’t go your way sometimes and when it doesn’t go your way, it’s heartbreaking.”

Roddy served as the lead coach for McGregor’s training camp to prepare for Mayweather and the two formulated a game plan to try and hand the 40-year old former champion his first professional loss.
McGregor made a strong showing for himself early winning multiple rounds but he was eventually cut down by Mayweather, who showed incredible patience and then timing to go for the kill in the 10th round.
“I was very upset over the fight because I know how bad he wants it and I know how bad the team wanted it,” Roddy said.
The good news is McGregor didn’t seem to take too much damage in the fight so he should be able to resume his mixed martial arts career in the near future.
McGregor is currently taking some time off to spend with friends and family after the fight but it probably won’t take him look to book his next fight to wash the bad taste of defeat out of his mouth.
