Referee, judges confirmed for Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor

The referee and the judges for the upcoming fight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor are now set.

On Wednesday, the Nevada State Athletic Commission approved the officials who will be in charge of the action inside the ring as well as those responsible for scoring the historic fight taking place on Aug. 26 in Las Vegas.

Referee Robert Byrd will be the third man in the ring when Mayweather puts his perfect 49-0 record on the line to take on  McGregor, who will be making his professional boxing debut.

The assignment might seem to favor McGregor because Byrd is well known for not interfering much in fights where he serves as referee. Byrd is a hands-off official, who will typically give fighters plenty of distance to work and he usually prefers to use his voice to separate the athletes locked in a clinch rather than physically breaking them apart.

Neither fighter’s camp filed any sort of complaint about the referee selection so obviously Byrd was obviously an easy choice for the assignment.

When it comes to the judges who will score the fight, the Nevada Commission selected Burt Clements, Dave Moretti and Guido Cavalieri.

All three judges are veterans in boxing with both Clements and Moretti having scored dozens of past fights involving Mayweather. Cavalieri has only worked one past Mayweather fight for his 2014 rematch with Marcos Maidana.

The Wednesday commission hearing also officially approved McGregor to receive his boxing license as well as Mayweather, who had to be approved because he’s fighting over the age of 38.

Zuffa LLC, the parent company of the UFC, was also approved as a co-promoter for the event for the sake of paying McGregor his share of the profits from the event.
